Author, Nancy Phillips, mother of
two and founder of DollarSmartKids Enterprises Inc., has created an audio
program, along with her children’s books, to help parents teach their children
financial life skills. After doing some research she discovered that most
schools weren’t teaching personal finance for kids and knew it was up to her.
She also learned that there were not a lot of resources out there to help her.
Nancy came up with the concept of creating children’s books that teach them
about money – like how to save and give. She shares “I help parents teach their
children financial life skills so they don’t have to go to bed at night
worrying about their child’s future." Nancy will share her passion of
“Zela Wela Kids” products, and educating our kids, on VoiceAmerica’s radio talk
show, Shining Bright with Regina Sisco, on Friday April 20, 2012 at 10:00am
Pacific Time and 1:00pm Eastern Time.
Children begin learning about money at home from the
influential people in their lives right from the time they are toddlers.
Modeling and learning from observation are two of the most powerful methods of
learning in all young children. Phillips says, "Learning good financial
habits can transform a child's future.
Financial decision making skills are used every day and affect every part of a person's life from health to relationships to careers and opportunities. Parents everywhere want to help their children learn these essential skills but aren't sure where to start or what to say and do. That's exactly why this audio program was created – to explain the key concepts in an easy to follow format that isn't intimidating."
Children need the opportunity to practice in order to learn from successes and disappointments. "Teaching kids money skills is very similar to teaching them a sport," comments Phillips. "You start with the basic fundamentals and show the children how to practice them during daily life. The kids learn more and more from their experiences over time and from consistent guidance. Parents don't need to worry about being investment or math geniuses; the principles are universal and straightforward. However, the skills must be taught and practiced for the children to benefit in the long-term. They don't learn by having somebody else do it for them. An added benefit is that many parents comment to me how they are learning to create good habits for themselves, while they teach their children!"
The audio program comes with a workbook, which illustrates the key money milestones for children to achieve relative to their age. Other topics addressed in the program include: damaging mistakes for parents to avoid when teaching money skills and answers to common questions regarding allowances and how to have the credit card "talk" with teens.
Phillips adds, "If we can increase the financial capabilities of our youth, it will significantly affect not only their personal financial well-being but that of their family and society as a whole."
