Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. Andrew Harvey, is a renowned and distinguished mystical scholar, Rumi translator and explicator, poet, novelist, spiritual teacher, writer, and architect of Sacred Activism.
Andrew was born in 1952 in South India where he lived till he was 9 years old, He credits these early years with forever shaping his sense of inner unity of all religions which left him with a permanent
and inspiring vision of a world infused with the sacred. He
left India to attend private school in England and in 1970 entered Oxford
University with a scholarship to study History. At the age of 21, he became the
youngest person to ever be awarded a fellowship to All Soul’s College,
England’s highest academic honor.
By 1977, he became disillusioned with life at Oxford and returned to his native India, where a series of mystical experiences initiated his spiritual journey. Over the next 30 years he plunged himself into different mystical traditions to learn their secrets and practices. In 1978 he began his long study and practice of Buddhism. He met a succession of Indian saints and sages including Thuksey Rinpoche and undertook the Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva vows with him. He later spent 10 years in Paris with a group of French Sufis under the guidance of Eva De Vetray-Meyerovitch the translator of Rumi into French.
In 2005, in the historic Sanataria de Guadalupe in Santa Fe New Mexico, Andrew delivered his vision of the contemporary crisis now confronting us in today’s world and its potential solution in what he termed, Sacred Activism.
